Felsőfernezely

The village of Firiza was first attested in the year 1329, being known by its old name of Ferneziul de Sus in Romanian and Felsőfernezely in Hungarian. The name comes from Hungarian (“fürész” means “saw” in English and “ferăstrău” in Romanian) and emphasizes the main occupation of the inhabitants: the forest and everything related to it. Firiza is now administratively part of the municipality of Baia Mare – a district lying at 10 kilometers from the city center, deep in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by volcanic mountains and dense forests. It has around 700 inhabitants, who are rather isolated, but the area is of a eerie natural beauty. The following photos are taken today, from the cemetery of Firiza; some details are censored and hidden on purpose. But one is easily captured by the otherworldliness of the area…
